The Need
Recreational and social activities in Starke County, as in most of America, center on sports, church, and the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Most will find some enjoyment in one or more of those choices, but for many, there’s a gnawing sensation that something is missing. A great variety of opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and entertaining social gatherings would be enriching and fun! Bringing creativity into daily life is a great way to accomplish this.
The word ‘art’ carries some hefty baggage – it brings to mind the Art Institute of Chicago, or a string quartet playing Brahms. These are wonderful things, but the mission of the COS Creatives Network focuses on fostering home-grown recreational and social activities community residents can do and participate in personally. That’s why we’re using the word ‘creatives’ instead of ‘artists’.
The goal is to create places and events for all kinds of creative activities: music, dance, photography, video, theater, knitting, comedy, creative cooking, gardening, sculpture, furniture design, traditional crafts, car detailing, tattooing, theater, writing, film appreciation, or book clubs – anything you can think of that encourages expression, that’s what the Creatives Network wants to highlight!
